Middlebury College

Ranked one of the finest institutions of higher learning in the country, Middlebury College draws exceptional students from across the country and around the world. EastView taps these talented students as summer interns and some of our residents and staff are host families (without supplying housing) for international students during their years on campus.

Middlebury College offers performances, lectures, dance and music recitals, and theatrical productions that add greatly to the region’s vibrancy. Perchance, might you be interested in “auditing” a Middlebury College class or attending performances of world-renowned musicians at Middlebury College’s Center for the Arts? Our residents love the many opportunities for engagement with college staff, students and guest lecturers throughout the year.

Collegiate level sports teams are great fun to follow (some of the football team has a tradition of coming to wash our windows before their season begins and staying long enough for a snack and a word game or two with residents) and in the summer the numerous Language Schools and Bread Loaf School of English add further sophistication to the region’s offerings.

Town of Middlebury

A welcoming college town, Middlebury delivers a wealth of opportunity.  There’s a thriving arts scene – museums, galleries, theaters, and performance halls as well as specialty shops along the main streets. Maybe you have a former musical instrument you’d like to dust off or a new one you’d like to take up – check out the Middlebury Community Music Center.

And there are plenty of specialty eateries with palate pleasing entrees featuring ethnic delights and locally sourced meats, produce and artisanal cheeses. The town has several grocery stores, a fabulous natural food co-op, and an extended summer seasonal Farmers Market.

In recent years it has also become the region’s hub of exceptional microbreweries, cideries, distilleries, and wineries.  In the summer, Middlebury is host for a week-long Festival on-the-Green in July featuring talented jazz and folk musicians from the US and Canada, and the Middlebury New Filmmakers Festival at the end of August.

Our Corner of the Sky

Looking east from EastView, we are drawn to the beauty of Vermont’s Green Mountain range. To the west are dramatic views of the Adirondacks just over the crest of the College campus.   Lake Dunmore and Lake Champlain are nearby with public access areas, and the Otter Creek flows through the center of Middlebury offering kayaking and canoeing options just minutes away from our EastView campus.

Within EastView’s community, our gardens are filled with native plantings, our ponds attract herons, the river is a common flyway for geese, and the long meadows are regularly frequented by wildlife. We are treated to a variety of birdlife in our gardens and feeders throughout the year.

Our resident naturalist, Dick Harlow has kept a log of sightings at EastView since 2013, both in a bird book in the main lobby and in his Nature Notes on the website. He also provides fun narratives of recent sightings at our bi-weekly ViVa! meetings.
